Why Do Workshops Need Hose Reels?

Workshops need hose reels for four main reasons: safety, efficiency, equipment longevity, and space management.

1. Safety and Risk Control

This is the most important reason, especially in industrial settings.

• Eliminating Trip Hazards: Hoses left lying across the floor are a common hazard in any workshop. They pose a risk to people walking by and can be easily damaged by forklifts or other vehicles. Hose reels keep the hose coiled off the ground or against the wall, removing this obstacle entirely.
• Preventing Damage and Leaks: Hoses left on the ground can be run over by vehicles, cut on sharp edges, or corroded by chemicals. This damage can lead to sudden bursts. • Ready When You Need It: Most hose reels have an automatic or manual retraction system. You simply pull the hose to the length you need to reach your work. When you’re done, a quick pull or a turn of the handle retracts it neatly. This is much faster than coiling it by hand.
• Saving Time and Labor: Manually coiling long hoses takes time and effort. A reel does the job in seconds, freeing up workers for more important tasks.
• Easy to Find: In a large workshop, fixed hose reels act as defined “utility points.” Everyone knows exactly where to go for compressed air, water, or lubricants. This saves the hassle of searching for fittings or dragging a long hose from across the shop.

3. Extending Hose Life

• Preventing Wear and Tear: Hoses left lying around can be crushed by heavy items, pinched in doors, or damaged by sunlight and oil. A reel offers a safe, protected place to store them.
• Avoiding Kinks: Hoses thrown on the floor are almost guaranteed to get tangled. The next time it’s used, the pressure inside will put extra stress on these kinked spots, leading to premature wear and bursts. A reel ensures the hose is stored in smooth, even coils, preventing kinks.
• Minimizing “Memory Effect”: If a hose is stored haphazardly for a long time, it develops a “memory” and holds those irregular bends. These bends restrict the flow of whatever is passing through it. Storing it on a reel in a proper coil keeps the hose flexible and free-flowing.

4. 5S and Better Use of Space

Modern workshops often follow 5S principles (Sort, Set in Order, Shine, Standardize, Sustain):

• Clearing the Floor: Getting hoses up off the floor makes the workspace cleaner, safer, and easier to maintain. It just looks more professional.
• Keeping Things Uniform: Having standardized reels at every station creates a tidy, organized look and reinforces good work habits.

• Auto Repair Shops: For storing air hoses used by impact wrenches and blow guns.
• Machine Shops: For dispensing coolant to machines or using compressed air to clean off metal chips.
• Fire Safety: Dedicated fire hose reels must be ready for immediate use and stored where they won’t be blocked.
• Agriculture or Car Washes: For storing water hoses used for cleaning equipment or vehicles.
